How to jailbreak iPhone and iPad on OS X Mountain Lion With RedSn0w

Yesterday Apple released OS X Mountain Lion which brings over 200 new features and many stability and security improvements. One of the main security improvements is called Gatekeeper, which allows to install Apps that are certificated by Apple and no other apps can be installed. The Gatekeeper was implemented after 700.000 Macs got infected with FlashBack Trojan. This security improvement blocks any available iPhone and iPad jailbreak solution out there but, luckily there’s a way around it.

jailbreak for iPhone 4S and new iPad

The iPhone Dev-Team has promised that a solution is on the way because they have applied for an official Apple Developer ID for RedSn0w.  I still highly doubt that the iPhone Dev-Team will get the official Apple Developer ID since this app is responsible for millions of jailbroken iPhones and iPads which means less revenue for Apple.

In this brief tutorial, you will learn how to jailbreak iPhone 4S and/or new iPad 3 on OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion using RedSn0w jailbreak app which is developed by the iPhone Dev-Team which is famous for creating most of the iPhone unlock and jailbreak solutions. This is untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 and works for both A4 and A5 devices but for A4 devices it requires to put your devices in DFU mode before you get started.

Please note. While this jailbreak is perfectly safe to use I strongly recommend to back up your data before you get started. Jailbreak can void the warranty so use it on your own risk.

Step 1) The very first thing you need to do is to download the latest version of RedSn0w, which at the tine if writing the article is RedSn0w v0.9.14b2.  This version works on all iPhone and iPad models running iOS 5.1.1, which is the current iOS version.

  • Download RedSn0w 0.9.14b2 for OS X Mountain Lion from here.

Step 2)  Now when you have RedSn0w downloaded you will need to Ctrl-Click-Open the RedSn0w app. This only needs to be done once to open this app, afterward it will work just like any other app. Ctrl-Click-Open gives information to Gatekeeper that you trust RedSn0w and it will not harm your computer.

Step 3)  When you have RedSn0w up and running on your Mac running OS X Mountain Lion you can perform jailbreak process just like on OS X Lion and older Mac versions.

Step 4) Plug in your iPhone or iPad to your computer and wait until RedSn0w recognizes your device.

Step 5) It shouldn’t take more than few second to see your device recognized. Now hit “Jailbreak” button to get started.

Step 6 ) RedSn0w will start jailbreaking your device. Jailbreak process looks similar to regular iOS restore and upgrade process so please don’t interrupt this process.

Step 7) Your iOS device will reboot few times during the jailbreak but once the process is complete and you see its lock screen it means you are ready to go. Now slide-to-unlock and make sure Cydia icon is present on your Springboard. It means that your iPhone or iPad is jailbroken and Apple no longer controls all your actions.

If you did everything like I described then you now have the iPhone 4S or new iPad 3 jailbroken running the iOS 5.1.1 firmware and you got it done using OS X Mountain Lion. Btw what you like the most about Mountain Lion and jailbreak?

If you are getting some trouble during the process please leave a message bellow and we will try to resolve it.
