How much users you con follow on Instagram and is there any way to bypass this limit?
Instagram is the most popular photo-sharing program and social network that was launched back in 2010. It allows to take images, add filters and then share those images on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or elsewhere. It became popular by its great photo filters that you can apply before sharing them with your friends.
Instagram initially supported iPhone and iPhone only and it was made available for Android users only in April 2012. Soon after Facebook acquired Instagram for whooping $1 billion in cash and Facebook stock which means that Facebook paid $33 for each Instagram user which is considered a lot because it has no revenue.
I recently started using Instagram and it is a great tool/service because of its simplicity and huge user base but there is one thing I found disappointing – follow limit. Instagram does not allow to follow more than 7,500 users even if 1,000,000 is following you, which means that you can’t follow back all users that are following you. After you start following 7,500 users you will get message “You can’t follow anymore people” after adding now followers.
If you are Instagram to share photos with your friends and family then you will never reach this limit but if you use it for business you will find it very easy to reach this limit.
After some research I found that this limit was set back in June due to increased amount of spam after $1 billion acquisition by Facebook. Spam is something all popular social networks face in early stage and each network tries to combat spam with different methods and Instagram decided to do by setting limit to users you can follow.
To make things even more unfair, Instagram has set this limitation for new users that haven’t reached 7,500 limit. Users who were following more than 7,500 users can now follow to unlimited number of users without ever reaching any limits.
There is no way to bypass that limitation and you should be careful to whom you follow. Unless you unfollow less active or bad-picture-sharing users you can’t make your Instagram account more active by adding more users.
I tried to find if there are other Instagram follow limits and found the following:
- 150 follows per hour
- 150 unfollows per hour
- 150 likes per hour
- 50 comments per hour
These limits were set to avoid automated scripts and bots to mass follow and unfollow users to reach greater number of followers. You shouldn’t care about these limits because it is impossible to follow 150 users in one hour unless you are running some automated script.
I guess there will be even more limitations introduced over the time because I have seen a lot of irrelevant comments that screams for spam. This happens to all social networks so we just have to get used to it.
Facebook must figure out how to make money with Instagram and its own mobile app because more and more users are switching to mobile devices but Facebook struggles to turn those visitors into profit. It is not like they are not making any money, but they are making much less than they possibly could with almost 1 billion active users.
