iPhone home button not working properly? How to fix it?

If your iPhone home button is not working in most cases you just need to calibrate it and here is how you can get it done.

iPhone Home Button Not WorkingIf you are reading this article there is a good chance that your iPhone home button is not working properly and you are looking how to fix it. Sometimes iPhone home button becomes sluggish and less responsive. This result in a delay, lag, or sometimes it doesn’t work at all and requires multiple pushes. This could be hardware related issue if you have dropped your phone or you like to show your strength by pushing button very hard but this isn’t the case most of the time.

The iPhone home buttons can become unresponsive due to faulty software or hardware but the second one does not occur too often. If it is hardware related problem then you should visit Apple Store to get your iPhone fixed and unless you have insurance on top of the standard warranty you will have to pay to fix it.

If this is a software related problem then you don’t have anything to worry about and you can try to fix it with simple trick (It’s hard to call it a tutorial when it’s so easy!).

  1. Turn of the iPhone completely and the turn it back on.
  2. Open any default application (Stocks, Weather, Calculator, etc) on the iPhone
  3. Press and hold the Power button (I hope you know where to find it :) ) till the “Slide to Power Off” dialog appears, then release the Power button
  4. Now press and hold the Home button (the one that is not working) until the “Slide to Power Off” dialog disappears. Congratulations you just recalibrate the iPhone home button.
  5. Test the iPhone home button

There is no perfect explanation why this trick helps but it’s worth to give it a try.

If this doesn’t help I would suggest you to restore iPhone and try to use it completely clean without any apps and files installed. You can do it by connecting the iPhone to computer via USB cable and opening iTunes and then going to Devices section.

The iPhone home button still not working?

You are screwed! This is hardware related problem and unless you have degree in engineering I would suggest you to visit Apple retail store.

In case your iPhone home button is not working and now you know that it is hardware related issue and paying Apple to fix it doesn’t sound appealing you can use iOS feature named Assistive Touch. This feature allows you to create workaround if your iPhone home button is broken completely or works only in one out of 5 times.

How to enable Assistive Touch?

  1. Go to Setting -> General -> Accessibility. Scroll down till you find AssistiveTouch option. Open it and turn it ON.Assistive Touch
  2. Then you will see transparent button at the bottom right corner of the screen. Tap on that button and you will see full touch menu on your screen.
  3. There you will see different options and Home button between them. The onscreen Home button will work just like a physical one.Assistive Touch

While it’s not the best way to fix broken iPhone home button but it sure will work in any situation.

If you have better solution for “iPhone Home button not working” problem, please leave a comment bellow to help others who struggle with this problem.

This solution works for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S probably for 3GS as well but I haven’t tested it.

The reason why the first tip works is because that’s the way to Force Quit applications in iOS.
Some apps have background tasks that might take up to 10 minutes and if you force quite them you basically kill that task, which isn’t recommended.
You might also corrupt things, so for god’s sake don’t do this!

I better take a risk and repair home button than be afraid and live without home button at all.
I case I will get some files or apps corrupted I can do a restore, so nothing to lose

That worked great, another fix that also seemed to work on my iphone 4 is:
    connect phone to your computer,
press and hold home button till voice control comes on,
then press cancel, repeat a few times.
seemed to fix my home button.

That trick worked for me! I didn’t even have to hook my phone to my computer either. Just simply held the home button until voice control came on a few times. Had to press the home button over and over a few times to get the voice control feature to actually come on though.

Hi, thanks a lot ! this tip worked for me too. Just to add a little more information I tried this 5-6 times twice. Then my home button started working fine. Iphone had been dropped from little height earlier.

I am glad it helped! :)
If you did just recalibration then this problem may reoccur after some time but since it is so simple you can repeat it over and over again and it will still work.
If you did a restore then it is almost bulletproof and you shouldn’t be worrying.

Guess I have a hardware issue then :/ But I guess I can live with Assistive touch till the iPhone 5 comes out, thanks for the tip! :)

Damn, Assistive touch is only available on iOS 5, and I’m stuck on 4.3.2 (bought my iPhone when I was living abroad and if I update the software, it will brick) and my nearest Apple Store is 2 hours drive away. So yep, I’m screwed. Sad. :(

I tried everything suggested and I’m sure to have a hardware issue and not a software issue. Assistive touch is a life saver for me right now. I’d much rather spend the funds on a new iPhone vs. paying for repairs. Thanks a bunch!

Thank you! Your trick did not fix my home button. After doing a restore, my home button still did not work, even with no apps installed. But your AssistiveTouch workaround will allow me to keep using my iPhone 4 until the iPhone 5 becomes available.

Kindly Help .

Try to restore it to factory state using iTunes. It will erase all your data and apps from the iPhone. If this doesn’t help it means that your iPhone has some hardware related issues.

Awesome, I had my iPhone Jailbroken because of this, but now I can return to normal.

Very easy, safe fix for this … roll up a tissue and dip into metho (or alcohol), and push in the button and rub the metho drenched tissue around the button, press the button in and out while you are rubbing (you want to make sure the metho gets under the button) … metho/alcohol will not damage electronics or the iPhone case.
When it is drenched, push it in and out a few times, then blow hard around the button and through the connector slot … presto!, will work fine every time!

I tried as per the steps. All worked fine. But I am not sure I will not be facing the same problem again. If its a software problem,I guess it may happen again.

Thanks so much! My son dropped my phone in the toilet and after letting it dry for 2 days everything works except the home button, guess it got shorted out. The assistive touch works great though and will have to do for the next year until I get an upgrade :)

This is the last straw for me, Apple suck. After sales service is atrocious. Every Apple product I’ve owned has had some sort of issue but a slave to fashion I kept buying the next ‘improved’ product. Well no more, a guy at work has a Samsung s2 and it simply works plus none of the arrogance of Apple when he took back for assitance. Apple products look great, and work great (when new) but its almost like they have built in little flaws so that you’re compelled to upgrade.
