What will be the name of OS X 10.9 and how does Apples choose names for OS X versions?
Apple recently released OS X 10.8 which is called Mountain Lion and it is the best Mac OS so far bringing over 200 new features. It brings tighter ICloud integration, social network integration and several other features borrowed from iOS, such as iMessage, Notes, Reminders, Notifications and others.
This version of OS X follows Apple’s usual naming pattern and is called Mountain Lion. The previous version of OS X was called Lion and it was major version of OS X bringing much more new features than Mountain Lion. The same thing happened with Leopard and Snow Leopard, when the first offered many news features while the second worked more like a service pack. That said, the next version of OS X is going to be huge.
Knowing this we can dig deeper into OS X naming pattern so here are all OS X 10.X names:
- Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah
- Mac OS X 10.1 Puma
- Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar
- Mac OS X 10.3 Panther
- Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger
- Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
- Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
- Mac OS X 10.7 Lion
- Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion
- Mac OS X 10.9 ….
We can clearly see that all OS X versions are named after big cats and OS X 10.9 most likely will be no different. I did some research to find out the possible name for OS X 10.9 and I actually found clear evidence at United States Patent and Trademark Office. Back in 2003 Apple added a number of new trademarks to its collection including Lynx, Cougar, Leopard, and Tiger. Since the last two are already used for OS X version names we end up with two variants – Lynx or Cougar.
Knowing that there’s a 50:50 possibly between these two names because Apple does not own other trademarks related to big cats and I don’t think Apple will give up this naming pattern without registering new names for trademarks. If the next major OS X version will be called Lynx then the one after will be called Cougar and vice versa.
We are still almost a year from the OS X 10.9 official release so it is hard to say what new this version will bring but I guess we will see even tighter connection between iOS and OS X since iOS devices are much more popular. We will let you know once more details about OS X 10.9 will be available but it remains mystery for now.
