Samsung Galaxy S2 vs Samsung Galaxy S3. Round One: Fight!

It’s already few days since the most anticipated Android smartphone ever, the Galaxy S3 is released so we wanted to compare it with its famous predecessor, the Galaxy S2.

Galaxy S2 vs Galaxy S3

I have played with the Galaxy S3 for almost a week since I got it a bit earlier than the rest of the world and I must say that this sure is the best smartphone I have ever used. While it is very similar to the HTC One X, I like the S3 more. It is my subjective opinion but it does feel better and fresher, maybe this is the reasons why Samsung uses slogan “inspired by nature and designed for humans” in its advertisements.

There is no doubt that the Galaxy S2 last year revolutionized Android and smartphone market in general. It had the best display, processor, and camera at that time and it bring smartphones in the whole new level. The Galaxy S2 also gave 2nd life for Android platform in general by introducing radically improved TouchWiz interface. Comparing the Galaxy S3 with Galaxy S2 is not fair as the S3 is completely new smartphone with improved specs but I still want to point out the main things Samsung has done over this past year to impress gadget and performance geeks.

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Galaxy S2: Software and features

Galaxy S3 vs S2

Both the Galaxy S2 and the galaxy S3 is based on Android platform and both runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with TouchWiz UI v4.0. The Galaxy S2 came with Android OS, v2.3.4 (Gingerbread) preinstalled but you can upgrade it to latest and greatest Android flavor.

While the both phones run the exact same version of Android and TouchWiz there are still some differences in interface but not anything radical changed though. I have already got used to TouchWiz UI and it feels a bit boring to me but if you are first time Android user you will most likely find it very attractive.

New additions to the Galaxy S3 are:

  • S Voice – Voice assistant similar to Siri which you can find on iPhone 4S. The S Voice can do everything that Siri can plus it allows you to fully control your smartphone with voice commands.
  • S Beam – Allows transferring files with help of NFC and Wifi Direct. It means that you can transfer files between two NFC powered devices just by putting them together and conforming file transfer with a single tap.
  • Smart Stay – turns off the phone when you’re not looking at it and keeps it on while you are looking. This is great for reading, watching videos and other daily tasks.
  • Direct Call – lets you call a contact simply by bringing the phone to your ear. It saves you all of one or two screen taps.

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Galaxy S2: Processor and performance

The Galaxy S3 features a quad-core Exynos 4212 processor clocked at 1.4GHz per core. This chip is based on the ARM Cortex A9 processor architecture, but tweaked and manufactured by Samsung internally. Preliminary benchmarks shows that the Exynos 4212 is the fastest smartphone processor in the world, leaving its main competitors, the dual-core Snapdragon S4 and the quad-core Tegra 3 far behind. In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S2 uses a dual-core 1.2 Ghz in house built Exynos processor.

Bellow you can see performance comparison between the Galaxy S3 and S2. We can see a clear winner here!

Galaxy S3 vs Galaxy S2: Display

The Galaxy S2 display

  • 4.3-inch with a 800 x 480 pixels resolution
  • Super AMOLED Plus capacitive touch-screen
  • 217 ppi pixel density

The Galaxy SS display

  • 4.8-inch HD with a 1280 x 720 pixels resolution
  • Super AMOLED capacitive touch-screen
  • 306 ppi pixel density

While the Galaxy S3 has PenTile technology display instead of proper RGB display as for the Galaxy S2 it still looks better than its predecessor. It has better viewing angles and improved color saturation and outstanding pixel density.

Galaxy S3 vs Galaxy S2: Storage and memory

The Samsung Galaxy S2 has either 16GB or 32GB storage option, while the Galaxy S3 also has 64GB option (coming soon). Both has microSD card slot to add up to 32GB extra storage. Both features 1GB of RAM but the Galaxy S3 in US and Canada will get 2GB of RAM.

Galaxy S2 vs Galaxy S3: Camera

Both smartphones features 8megapxiel back facing camera with utofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus functionality, face/smile detection, image stabilization and 1080p video capture. While the cameras have the same features, the Galaxy S3 capture better quality images, it is achieved by introducing new image sensor and software.

Front facing camera has experienced downgrade from 2 to 1.9 megapixels but the image quality feels better and colors looks more natural.

Galaxy S2 vs Galaxy S3: Battery

The Galaxy S2 is comparison has 1650 mAh vs 2100 mAh battery as for the Galaxy S3. The Galaxy S3 has larger display, quad-core processor but it still manages to show impressive battery life outperforming its predecessor and its main rivals, the iPhone 4S and HTC One X.

It still discussable how long the Galaxy S3 battery will last due to different usage patterns but it is guaranteed that it will last longer than the Galaxy S2.

Based on benchmarks the Galaxy S3 battery offers:

  • Over 10 hours talk time (8:34h for Galaxy S2)
  • Over 5 hours of web browsing (4:24h for Galaxy S2)
  • Over 10 hours of video playback (8h for Galaxy S2)

Verdict

Like I said it is hard to put the Galaxy S2 vs Galaxy S3 as last one is completely overhauled and it’s hard to find similarities between them.

The Galaxy S3 is the best and most powerful Android smartphone to date. It is true successor to the Galaxy S2 and has faced upgrade in any aspect. While many feel disappointed about its design I still find it very attractive and very easy to hold and use.

If you currently own the Galaxy S2 then upgrade might not be worth the money but if you are power user who wants to have the latest and greatest or you currently own the Galaxy S3, the Galaxy S3 is a must have upgrade.

I couldn’t wait for the gs3.i own the gs2 running cyanogen mod 9 4.0.4 (vanilla).Boy am I disappointed. The camera is the only thing on the gs3 that’s better, providing crisper looking close up shots(but gs3 doesn’t zoom in as close when viewing the image).Theres alot of gimmicky apps that simply aren’t needed, sure it scores higher on the benchmark scores but my romed up gs2 gives it a run for its money(and it’s alot of money). The verdict I packed the gs3 back up and stuck it on eBay.You can’t beat a rooted gs2 with a ice cream vanilla rom.:)

SG2 is better for normal sized hands, and with an extended Sassung 2000mAh battery, it matches if not exceeds the SG3 on battery life.

I’ve got the S2 and I was crying when the S3 came out. All I wanted to do was upgrade because we all know the Galaxy S’s are the best android (iPhone is nothing) phones and the newer the better right. After seeing how big the screen is I don’t think I want to go there, my phone is already big enough as it is. It does everything I want it to. I like the square look of the S2, the S3 edges doesn’t look as gangster, it’s been streamlined for the girls. If I had $1000 dollar voucher to buy a phone I’d buy the S2. I think Samsung just wanted us to think it’s way better because it’s got a big screen. If they keep making bigger screens imagine how big the S6 will be… ridiculous. I honestly think the S3 is for girls who want to show their toys off…

The next Galaxy series smartphone most likely will have the same (technologically improved) 4.8 inch display unless the device itself becomes smaller thanks to edge-to-edge display (technology is not there yet).
This is why Samsung offers Galaxy Note for people who thinks different and I think this will remain for at least next few years.

Agreed me and my wife have rooted gs2′s. The new one looks gay because of the curved look. Besides I heard the only good thing about the new one is the front camera flash

      • somercamb August 29, 2012 at 1:29 pm #

Joe, I have the S3 and there is no front camera flash….

This article is inaccurate and no one has fixed it? The S3 will have a different processor when it hits the US. Snapdragon dual core in place of the Exynos. It probably wasn’t such a good idea to compare the international version of the S3 with the S2.

    • Richard June 20, 2012 at 7:20 pm #

This is comparison between international version of the Galaxy S3 and international version of the Galaxy S2.
The Galaxy S3 US version has 2GB of RAM, Snapdragon S4 processor and 4G LTE support.

Why would the downgrade the front facing camera…that’s dumb!

Why didn’t the improve the rear camera?

The original Galaxy allowed you to pause the video during recording and continue again without creating a new video file. The S2 removed this feature which was really DUMB!

Will the S3 allow you to pause video recording???

eu amo celulares. e o que eu mais gosto é o
    Samsung Galaxy S3
ele é lindo, pequeno e fofinho, e também eu ouvi dizer que ele tem uma câmera muito nítida, é verdade ?

How can you claim the s2 had the best camera at the time?? Have you completely forgotten the nokia n8? Also the s2 beats s3 with a more powerful LED flash/torch depending on what you use it for and the s2 has MUCH better battery life. Nice review all the same
