For many tech fans the year of 2011 will be remembered as Samsung vs. Apple fight, this was due to many patent lawsuits with varying success to both companies. The main fight was in cellphone market and Samsung Galaxy S2 vs. Apple iPhone 4 and later on vs. iPhone 4S.
Apple fans of course were voting for their loved handset but in reality they lost in more aspects than Samsung fans. For instance Galaxy S2 has larger screen, better performance more customization options, turn-to-turn navigation and much other features that are present in Galaxy S2 but are missed out in iPhone. Of course iPhone 4 and 4S are great handsets because of their great premium feel and built quality as well as ecosystem covered around the iPhone but still lack for Android handsets.
Ok, let’s get back to the point: Samsung Galaxy S3 vs. iPhone 4S. As you might be noticed there is no Galaxy S3 at the time I writing this but we have heard many rumors about this mythical device that everyone loves already but no one have seen it in real life. I will base this comparison on rumors that we have heard from trusted sources and you can find them here and here.
Comparison between Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 4S.
Display: Apple iPhone 4S has LED-backlit IPS TFT, capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors 640 x 960 pixels, 3.5 inches (~330 ppi pixel density) while Samsung Galaxy S3 will more likely get Super AMOLED plus capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors, 720 x 1280 pixels, 4.6 inches (~320 ppi pixel density). iPhone 4S display has better viewing angles than any other smartphone display but it can’t be compared to AMOLED’s stunning colors and brightness. Not to mention that iPhone has much smaller display and typing could be very difficult for those with large hands. Both phones has very durable displays iPhone oleophobic coating vs. Galaxy S3 Corning Gorilla Glass.
Memory: Apple iPhone 4S has 16/32/64 GB built-in storage options and no SD card or any other extendable memory capability. Samsung Galaxy S3 more likely will get 16 and 32 GB versions and SD card slot with up to 32 GB extra memory. iPhone 4S just like its predecessor has 512 MB RAM while Galaxy S3 are rumored to get 2GB of RAM. Galaxy S3 predecessor Galaxy S2 has 1GB of RAM. These numbers feels a bit unfair but in reality Android consumes more RAM because of multitasking while iPhone 4S also has multitasking it doesn’t work like Androids polished one.
Connections: Apple iPhone 4S has Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth version 4.0 with A2DP support along with USB version 2.0. Samsung Galaxy S3 will have Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth version 3.0+HS along with microUSB MHL version 2.0 support. It means that you can use any standard microUSB cable to connect Galaxy S3 to TV, Computer or any other device, while you need Apple’s cable to connect it to other devices. There are no other major differences as both phones has similar connection technologies used.
Camera: Samsung Galaxy S3 will have 12 megapixel camera with the largest digital sensor ever built into smartphone so we can expect better quality pictures in lower light as it’s mine problem for today’s smartphone cameras. Galaxy S3 will have 2 megapixel front facing camera for video calling for using your phone as mirror (ladies will really appreciate this option).
While iPhone 4S comes with an 8 megapixel 3264×2448 pixels back facing camera and VGA front facing camera.
Both phones has autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection and image stabilization features along with 1080p Full HD video recording capability.
Processor: Samsung Galaxy S3 may feature a quad-core or dual-core processor: Exynos 4212 1.8 GHz or Exyos 5250 2 GHz to be exact. As the quad-core names suggests, processors will have 2 or 4 cores but we will find exact information at the time Galaxy S3 will be released. However, Apple iPhone 4S has A5 dual-core processor powered by 1 GHz Cortex-A9 chip series.
For users it means that Galaxy S3 will have much more processing power than iPhone 4S but Apple iOS is more polished and optimized for these A5 processors than Android is for any other processors in the market so this difference won’t be that sever for daily tasks.
Operating System: Just like Galaxy Nexus the Galaxy S3 will have Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich baked in. Samsung Galaxy S3 will also have TouchWiz 5.0 modification for my mentioned Android OS version.
In this fight iOS 5.0 will more likely lose the battle as Ice Cream Sandwich is the latest and greatest Android version featuring things that iOS device owners have dreamed of for years, like customization, widgets, better notification system. There are many other things that makes Android better than iOS but it’s still far from perfect as iOS stands out with simplicity and better app design.
Battery: According to previous rumors and leaked specs, Samsung Galaxy S3 expected to have 2250mAh battery which is much larger than iPhone 4S’s Li-Po 1432 mAh battery. But taking into account that Galaxy S3 hardware will be more powerful and battery demanding than iPhone 4S hardware then both phones will get you through the day on heavy usage and that’s about it.
Other features: Samsung Galaxy S3 will have NFC (Near field communication) support for faster file, contact, etc. transferring between devices. Galaxy S3 just like its comrade-in-arms Galaxy Nexus won’t have any front facing buttons; instead they will be replaced with touch sensitive buttons. Samsung’s flagship will have 4G LTE support with even data transfer rates than its predecessor.
This is short comparison between upcoming Samsung Galaxy S3 and Apple iPhone 4S and more exact information will be provided once Galaxy S3 will be released.
Please note: This article is based on rumors that you can found on our website as well as other online resources and information at the time Galaxy S3 will be release might differ from information covered here.
